The 2021 International Geography and Sustainability Workshop (online) will be held from November 23 to 24. This workshop brings together researchers around the world, in collaboration with IGU commissions, to identify common challenges and discuss solutions to promote sustainable development through an integrated geographic perspective. It will present the latest research progress on geography and sustainability and is expected to provide a valuable contribution to transforming our world for sustainable development. Specific objectives are: to identify critical research areas on geography and sustainability; and present the geographical case studies on transforming our world for sustainable development.

During August 13-14, 2021, the 19th International Conference on Spatial Data Handling and Geographic Intelligence was successfully held. The IGU Comission on Geographical Information Science and Commission on Modeling Geographical Systems co-organized this conference.
The 1st training session on Chinese geographic analysis models was successfully held during August 9th-16th, 2021. This training session was mainly organized by Nanjing Normal University, the Geographical Society of China (GSC), China Society of Natural Resources (CSNR), China Association for Geospatial Information Society (CAGIS), Chinese National Committee of International Society for Digital Earth (ISDE). Our Modeling Geographical Systems Commission of the International Geographical Union (IGU) was also one of the co-organizers to support the training session.
This training session focused on four hydrological models: Distributed Time Variant Gain Model (DTVGM) developed by the team of Prof. Jun Xia (Wuhan University, the Academician of CAS), Uncertainty Quantification Python Laboratory (UQ-PyL) developed by the team of Prof. Qingyun Duan (Hohai University), Geomorphology-Based Hydrological Model (GBHM) developed by the team of Prof. Dawen Yang(Tsinghua University), and Spatially Explicit Integrated Modeling System (SEIMS) developed by the team of Prof. Junzhi Liu (Nanjing Normal University, Lanzhou University). There were 1280 students from 384 universities, institutes, and companies in 10 nations attending the online training session.
The success of this training session can promote the construction of the Chinese geographic model ecosystem and the open and sustainable geographic model community. It can also facilitate the model reusing, knowledge sharing, and collaborative geographic research.

geographical analysis models) was successfully held in Nanjing Normal University during Jan 16th-17th, 2021. This forum
was mainly organized by Key Laboratory of the Virtual Geographic Environment, Ministry of Education of PRC and School of Geography,
Nanjing Normal University with several co-organizers including the Geographical Society of China (GSC), China Society of Natural
Resources (CSNR), China Association for Geospatial Information Society (CAGIS), Chinese National Committee of International Society
for Digital Earth (ISDE), International Environmental Modelling and Software Society (iEMSs), Modeling Geographical Systems Commission
of International Geographical Union (IGU), Commission on Geospatial Analysis and Modeling of International Cartographic Association (ICA),
Young Geographer Working Group of Asian Geographical Association (AGA), Jiangsu Center for Collaborative Innovation in Geographical Information
Resource Development and Application, and Yangtze River Delta State Sub-center of National Earth System Science Data Center. Due to the
prevention and control measures of COVID-2019, the forum was synchronously conducted in the onsite and offsite way with the support of
Tencent Meeting, ZOOM, and Bilibili Live.
The forum began with the opening ceremony hosted by Prof. Linwang Yuan (the Dean of the School of Geography) on
Jan 16th. Prof. Guoxiang Chen, the President of Nanjing Normal University, Prof. R. B. Singh, the
Secretary General and Treasurer of IGU, Prof. Stefan Reis, the President of iEMSs, Prof. Guoyou Zhang,
the Vice President and Secretary General of GSC, Prof. Shengkui Cheng, the President of CSNR, Prof. Zengning Wang,
the Secretary General of CAGIS, and Prof. Jiantao Bi, the Deputy Secretary General of Chinese National Committee
of ISDE were invited to give speeches. Moreover, Prof. Huijun Wang, the Academician of Chinese Academy of Sciences
(CAS), Prof. Huayu Lu, the Vice President of GSC, Prof. Lijie Pu, the Vice President of CSNR, Prof. Guonian Lv,

The National Geographic Modeling and Simulation Forum, which was founded in 2017 by Nanjing Normal University, aims to explore cutting-edge progress and scientific breakthroughs in the field of geographic modeling and simulation and to provide a unique platform for sharing scientific research achievements, exchange academic ideas, and strengthening academic cooperation among Chinese geographical modelers. Focusing on the development of domestic geographical analysis models and modeling platforms, this forum calls on Chinese geographical modelers to work together to develop domestic geographical analysis models and to build an ecological circle of autonomous model systems for the target of constructing Chinese autonomous geographical simulators and promoting the international researches in the fields of geographic modeling and simulation.

In the age of Internet, big data has become an important resource of human society.
It is growing exponentially and rapidly affecting the development and transformation of human society.
There are new opportunities that have also been taking place in the development of geography.
In this context, the stage of "measurement revolution" and the application of geographic information system
in geographic models and geographic information analyses have been past, and now they are stepping into the era of big data.
On one hand, we need to find a way to invert the process of changes in the earth’s surface and establish a
geoscience information map through the spatiotemporal digital construction based on computational science. On the
other hand, with the support of big data and artificial intelligence, we need to explore the complex laws of earth
surface changes relying on the professional knowledge of geosciences, through which we can discover new geoscience
knowledge and realize holographic intelligent planning and prediction of the future. For example, there has been COVID-19
spreading globally since early 2020 until nowadays. To tackle the pandemic, spatiotemporal big data analysis and geographic
modelling have been put forward with higher requirements in terms of geographic detection of epidemic risk, spatiotemporal
diffusion laws, dissemination of early warnings, medical resource analysis, online public opinion monitoring, etc..
This session aims to discuss and explore related theories,
methods and potential practices, facilitating communication between experts from different domains, encouraging extensive discussion regarding the
potential directions of the field, and promoting further research for a bright future.
The deadline for the abstract proposals is January 11th, 2022.

The general election of Modeling Geographical Systems Commission (MGSC) of International Geographical Union (IGU), was
a success. At the invitation of the International Geographical Union, Professor Chen Min of Nanjing Normal University
will be the chairman of the Modeling Geographical Systems commission. At the same time, the IGU of MGSC selected a
Secretary-General, 10 steering committee members and 10 Honorary advisory members.

The geographic environment is a huge and complex system, in which existing various natural processes, human activities, and information interactions. Researchers have made and are continually making efforts in understanding this complicated environment. In addition to in-depth exploration in a single discipline, study that integrating knowledge from multiple fields is getting more and more attention. Following such a trend, Virtual Geographic Environment (VGE) was proposed as a new generation of geographic analysis tool. The construction of a VGE brings Geographic Information Science (GIS) together with natural geography and human geography, and it mainly aims to form a digital twin of the real world. In a VGE, different experiments can be conducted and potential solutions for the real world can be explored based on geographic rules. In this context, we propose a Special Issue that targets on constructing VGE based on ubiquitous geographic information, which can support better modeling and simulation of the real world.

The digitization of energy systems provides potential growth in energy efficiency by integrating and analyzing data for environmental management. Three emerging trends in using digital technology, active energy management systems (EMSs), data-driven consumer engagement platforms, and new performance-based revenue models, support the significant improvement of energy efficiency. Specifically, data detection technologies (e.g., sensors and smart meters) are used not only to collect data on the production process but also to determine energy consumption factors.

Over half of the global population live in urbanized areas. These areas have become the geographic focus of resource consumption and chemical emissions. Pollutants among the urban environmental multi-media (including water, soil, air, etc.) are intensifying, causing chronic public health risk and increase in hazard via multi-exposure pathways and multi-scale distribution differences. One way to measure the impact is with the Environmental Health Risk Management (EHRM), widely used as a policy tool. This multi-disciplinary tool collects data for hazard identification, exposure assessment, dose-response assessment, risk characterization, and risk countermeasures.

Recent years have witnessed a massive increase in the volume and quality of water data available to aid water resources decision makers, managers, and scientists. This has been accompanied by exponential growth in both desktop and cloud computing data storage and computational capabilities. As a result, there are abundant opportunities to drastically change how water data are collected, managed, disseminated, and analyzed—which should ultimately have significant positive impacts on water science, engineering, and management. Indeed, we are at the beginning of a new era in water data science, which brings with it many new and interesting technological and scientific challenges and opportunities. This Special Issue of Water is intended to bring together some of the latest research on hydroinformatics for water data management and analysis. Toward this goal, we are seeking submissions in a wide range of topics including data collection and analysis tools and technologies, hydrologic information systems, distributed hydrologic modeling and simulation, open water data initiatives, big data in hydrology, geographic information technologies in water data, and related areas.
